a brief history of screen printing
Using a screen for stencilling artwork can be traced to China around AD 221 as a means to print patterns onto fabric. It was adopted by Japan relatively soon after where the adapted the process using paper stencils for more consistency.
Early screen meshes were made with threads of hair to keep the stencils in place but were soon replaced with silk. The introduction of screen meshes helped more intricate stencils to remain in place and helped to create much more complex prints.
In the 20th century, screen printing was used mainly for commercial purposes for things like sign writing and advertisements. In 1962, Andy Warhol began using silk screen printing to create his artwork and arguably one of the most recognisable adopters of the medium and is credited for its rise in popularity.
